Foreign Minister Ali Sabry told Parliament it was Prof. Meththika Withanage and Dr. Channa Perera who insisted the Government carry on the cremation policy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Government’s decision to cremate the bodies sparked controversy as the Muslim community does not want to follow the practice according to their religious beliefs.
However, the Government went ahead with the decision until it was decided to allocate burial grounds for COVID-19 bodies.
Speaking in Parliament Ali Sabry said he argued in the Cabinet against forced cremation several times as it portrayed Sri Lanka as a barbaric country.
Although everyone in the Cabinet agreed Prof. Meththika Withanage and Dr. Channa Perera insisted the Government go ahead with the cremation policy, claimed.
