The government is trying to suppress the proble into recent prison break-ins caused by State Minister Lohan Ratwatte and also trying to protect the latter, the TNA alleged.
In an interview with The Island newspaper, TNA MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam said that the CID is yet to record the statements of those threatened by Ratwatte at Anuradhapura Prison.
Speaking further, Rasamanickam said that a group of TNP members including him had been able to meet to eight inmates who were allegedly threatened by Ratwatte at gun point.
“One of them told us that he didn’t want to cause himself further trouble. His concers are quite fair because the police proved incapable of handling the investigation,” he alleged.
“If the Prisons Department acted in a respoble manner when the State Minister broke into Welikada Prison on 6 September, the incident happened in Anuradhapura on 12 September could have been prevented. The government should provide an explanation as to why the authorities failed to take any action regarding the first incident.”
He alleged that the Prisons Department would have quietly hushed up the incidents if they were not given publicity by both the mainstrem media and social media users.
The TNA wish to take up these matters with the visiting EU delegation, Rasamanickam said.
