Former Sri Lankan Head Coach Tom Moody, who joined Sri Lanka Cricket once again last year as the director of cricket for a period of three years, is set to part ways with the organization after serving in the role for one and a half years according to the Sunday Times.
Moody was hired by the Technical Advisory Committee led by Aravinda de Silva in March 2021. As the director of cricket, he was to overlook everything from the structure of the domestic game to the pathway of players in the Men’s and Women’s game in Sri Lanka. His contract also mandates that Moody tspend at least 300 days in Sri Lanka focusing on “analysis of the future tours programme” during the three years.
Although Sri Lanka Cricket has made some giant strides in a positive direction during his stint, SLC feels his service is no longer needed mainly due to the fact former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene is heavily involved in the restructuring and reshaping the future of SLC. As the contract will come to a premature end, SLC will have to pay US$ 45,000 as compensation to the former Australian cricketer. Moody was paid a fee of US$ 2,000 for each day he spent in Sri Lanka, in addition to all other perks including five-star accommodation.
According to sources, SLC & Moody have already mutually agreed to part ways and SLC believes paying compensation is a better option than keeping Moody in the setup for a further one and a half years.
With Moody as coach, Sri Lanka played some of their best cricket from 2005 to 2007 which included a World Cup final, a huge amount of success in the test format and an ODI series whitewash in England. With him as the Director of Cricket, Sri Lanka enjoyed white ball series wins against India, Australia and South Africa to go with the Asia Cup win.
