Remarks of a Youtube councellor named Ama Dissanayake against LGBTQ community at a Police training programme at Kandy Police Auditorium have sparked controversy on social media.
In video clip circulated on social media, Dissanayake was seen claiming that being a homosexual is unnatural.
“Homosexuality is against the human nature. If your parents were homosexuals, you would not have been born. Few years ago, some people tried to say that this is normal. But it is not and I will tell you the reasons one by one,” she was seen saying.
When she questioned the Police officers whether they like to see their children being ‘victimized’ by a homosexual person, the officials were heard shouting ‘No.’
Many human rights and LGBTQ activists expressed their anger and disbelief over these remarks and pointed out that promoting discrimination against LGBTQ community is unacceptable and unethical for a councellor.
They even criticized Sri Lanka Police for allowing conducting such training programmes for Police Officers.
On Zero Discrimination Day in March, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said as the President of Sri Lanka, he is determined to secure everybody’s right to live life with dignity regardless of age, gender, sexuality, race, physical appearance, and beliefs.
The Attorney General too had held that discrimination against LGBT persons is unconstitutional and violates Article 12 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
