Sri Lanka ranked 65 out of 116 countries in Global Hunger Index

Sri Lanka has been ranked 65 in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in 2021 out of 116 countries with a score of 16.0.

Accordingly, Sri Lanka has a level of hunger that is moderate.

In 2020 Sri Lanka was ranked 64.

South Asian countries India (101), Bangladesh (76) and Pakistan (92) are in tge alarming hunger category according to the GHI.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool for comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national levels over recent years and decades. GHI scores are based on a formula that captures three dimensions of hunger—insufficient caloric intake (undernourishment), child undernutrition, and child mortality—using following four component indicators.

1. UNDERNOURISHMENT: the share of the population that is undernourished, reflecting insufficient caloric intake
2. CHILD WASTING: the share of children under the age of five who are wasted (low weight-for-height), reflecting acute under nutrition
3. CHILD STUNTING: the share of children under the age of five who are stunted (low height-for-age), reflecting chronic under nutrition.
4. CHILD MORTALITY: the mortality rate of children under the age of five
