The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has initiated an investigation into an incident where two persons were arrested while transporting high-powered explosives in a lorry at Vilattawa in Bingiriya, Daily Mirror reported.
According to Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa, the investigation into the incident was handed over to the TID to determine whether they were involved in any terrorist activities or posed a threat to national security.
The Police Spokesperson, however, said that primary investigations ruled out a terrorism link but the suspects are being interrogated under the detention order.
The suspects were arrested with the lorry by Bingiriya Police while transporting explosives in a secret compartment on Kurunegala – Mannar road.
Daily Mirror reported 89 pipes laden with explosives, service threads used for explosions, and 900 electric detonators packed in 9 boxes with 100 each used to detonate bombs were found inside the lorry.
The suspects had said they were taking the explosives to Mannar to be used for fishing.
