Fishermen in the Northern Province engaged in a protest today (17) against the forcible encroaching on Sri Lankan waters by Indian fishermen.
Accordingly, about hundred fishing boats set out to sea from Mullaitivu to Point Pedro to engage in the protest, hoisting black flags with the slogan, ‘#SaveOurFishermen.’
TNA MPs M.A. Sumanthiran and Shanakiyan Rasamanickam also participated in the protest with fishermen.
They demanded a permanent solution for long standing issues due to Indian fishermen.
In a video posted on his twitter account, Shanakiyan said that the protest is against the conduct of Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda.
“Devananda has failed to provide solutions for this issue faced by our people. He does nothing
when Indian fishermen enter into Sri Lankan waters and engage in illegal fishing and other practices. If he cannot fulfill his duties properly he should resign and go home,” Rasamanickam stressed.
