National Security and Disaster Management State Minister Chamal Rajapaksa today (13) told Parliament that 106 persons have been died due to natural disasters so far this year while only 62 persons died last year.
Speaking during the Adjournment debate this evening, Rajapaksa said that about 23,119 houses have been damaged so far this year and the total houses that were damaged last year were 29,584.
Also, 1,895 individuals from 546 families from ten Divisional Secretariats in the Kegalle District were displaced due to extreme weather during the past couple of weeks while 6 deaths were reported in the District.
Moreover, 8 houses have been fully damaged and 278 houses were partially damaged in the Kegalle District.
The State Minister said that those who affected by extreme weather will be provided with an initial payment of Rs. 10,000 for damaged houses.
