The Court of Appeal today issued notices to the Cabinet to appear before the Court over the decision to set the compulsory retirement age of specialist doctors at 60.
This was following the writ petition before the Court of Appeal filed by about 176 consultant specialist doctors who have challenged the government’s decision to reduce their compulsory retirement age to 60 years.
Meanwhile, the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub Committee, headed by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene, set up to decide on the compulsory retirement age for specialized services and posts including doctors, have been included in the Order Paper of Parliament to be approved on 26 November.
However, the Leader of the House informed Parliament on 24 November that the Cabinet Sub Committee will henceforth be acting on the advice received from the Attorney General as a few petitions had been submitted to Court pertaining to the Cabinet decisions.
